Slides 2–5: Obtain about 3–5 images from this period in history that particularly interests you. Based on what you’ve observed, what are the key visual components to this design movement that you would like to refer to when designing your poster? Put your images on these slides and create bullet points to describe the key visual components to this design movement that you would like to refer to when designing your poster.
Then, begin a photo search or begin creating illustrations to use next week when you start your designs.

Project #1, Option 1: Create an expensive nutraceutical product that promises to help people with their health. Solo—Write the story, develop the brand, design the logo, build the packaging (PSD mockups OK), and place it (and all its content) into a single page landing page for the product.
For Option 1: Bring to class next week: April 22-23: 250+ word backstory. The myth behind the brand. Moodboard, 3 logo ideas, fonts and colors, packaging sketches.
Project #1, Option 2: ‘ Car 2 Go’ for the outdoors: Design a mobile app and include the task flows of onboarding, booking a vehicle, customization of gear, and the logistics of pickup and drop-off. Also, design the landing page. (XD or Sketch)
For Option 2: Bring to class next week: April 22-23 Summary of research, list of features, how it works.
Project #1, Option 3: Microsoft is coming out with voice controlled TV/Smart home digital assistant: Based on your user research, what features would you want to include. These could include voice recognition, facial recognition, gesture controls, personal recommendations, favorites, ratings, parental controls, social sharing, ability to make purchases in real time, metadata about the show (like Amazon X-Ray). Additional Smart home features could include requests for weather, traffic, recipes or similar daily tasks. Produce a 60-90 second video which partially demonstrates onboarding and shows 3 or 4 vignettes of this system in use.

Part 1: Choose ONLY ONE extended typeface family & one point size for the type to start your project. Create at least 4 columnar digital iterations which explore position, alignments, grouping, & hierarchy, on various columnar grids (similar to the recipe exercise.pdf file we worked on in class)
Part 2: Then choose ONE digital iteration and create ONE rough comp for your poster. You may add color, imagery, and an optional second typeface classification to your rough comp. For this week, strive for progress, not perfection with your comp.
Next week when we meet, I’ll be setting up break out rooms for peer-to-peer groups from 9am –10am-ish. Then we’ll be meeting in groups of 2–3 on Zoom for feedback. I’ll set up meeting times and post it to Slack’s Typography channel. If you can not make the designated meeting time, dm me and we can work something out. I should be able to meet with 1/2 the class next week and then 1/2 the class the following week.

Homework for this week—Team project:
Option 1: Research the Cannabis Industry, especially in states like Washington. How do people consume cannabis now? Who are they (archetypes)? What is the difference between THC and CBD? What about Indica vs. Sativa? Bring a new cannabis product to market. Design the brand, the packaging (PSD mockup OK) and put all that into a website built in Webflow .
For Option 1: Bring to class next week: May 27–28 Product pitch and persona. Mood board, logo rough, colors, fonts, photos
Option 2: Cannabis drone delivery: Quarantine is still happening and you cannot leave your home to go to the pot shop. Solve all logistical problems for cannabis home delivery via drone. Probably a combination of mobile app and short video, but deliverables are up to you.
For Option 2: Bring to class next week: May 27 –28 Summary of logistics, How will you solve this problem? Google maps is not precise enough. What about apartment buildings, duplexes, balconies, which side of the house, etc?
Option 3: Data Visualization. Love in the time of Covid-19. Inspired by the great short film from Tom Van Deusen. Make a survey, asking people how they are approaching sex, dating, and relationships in the time of social distancing. Analyze your data and distill it into 10 trends, archetypes, or stories. Add 10 illustrations, graphs, charts, pull quotes, or gifs. Place it all into a responsive website built in Webflow . Make it look and feel like journalism. Note: Start your survey right now, so you have plenty of data by May. Your survey should probably be anonymous, but if you know 10 people who would like to be profiled, you could take that route. If you’re not comfortable with potentially NSFW subject matter, please don’t choose this option.
For Option 3: Bring to class next week: May 27 –28 Summary of 10 data trends. What we learned from our survey

_________________________
Part 1: Make a 4 page InDesign document, select facing pages, start page # 2, Page size — 10” x 12” with .125” bleeds.
Part 2: Sketch out quick ideas for your layout before you hop in InDesign to get an idea of margins, number of columns, and general position & scale of key elements.
Part 3: Set up your Master Pages and thread your body text. Block in potential image placement, & pull-quotes.
Part 4: Find high resolution images to use or start creating illustrations which fit the tone of your article.
Part 5: Then focus primarily on the opening spread of your article — the first two pages of your article.
You will be using a combination of columnar grids and a hierarchical / intuitive grid structure for this spread. Pay attention to potential alignments and scale relationships between your text and your image.
