Print booklet to post script does not work

Imposing should be done by the printer, not by the designer. Print booklet from InDesign is a mess and should better be removed.

What OS? If you are using OSX you need to install the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD:

The PPD will let you choose any paper size. Here I'm saving 13.5x13 centered on a 30x15 page

but the ps file does not look right when opened as a pdf.

You are distilling the .ps?

I agree with Willi. It's a horrible clunky feature that has never worked properly especially to create a PDF.

That is best done by exporting and if an inhouse booklet printing is needed, use Acrobat's booklet feature instead.

Imposition is the job of the printer, not a designer.

so, if you're the printer? and the quality warrants? designer is something to put on an invoice if you have to - I am almost always making things go, not working in hr.

But "find another printer if they can't impose" may or may not work if you live in Caribou Maine and County Kwik Print is the only game in town—there are exceptions to every latest and greatest workflow.

If you are the printer buy an imposing plugin for Acrobat or any other imposing software. Imposing from InDesign is a mess and should be avoided.

My point is we don't know all of the variables that any poster faces—they may need simple imposition for a one color job where transparency and CM aren't an issue and can't control what happens downstream. It is fair enough (and important) to clarify that imposition is usually the printer's responsibility, but it is a generalization and there could be an exceptions.

With the correct PPD I haven't had any problems with print booklet on OSX—is there a reproducible bug?

I very much agree... but sometimes a client wants a real folding booklet proof to approve.

This workaround no longer works. This is very frustrating as I used to be able to do this without fail whenever I needed it. Why would this specific feature lose support and have such a weird workaround? Does anybody have any updated info regarding this issue? Thank you.

The whole thing is nothing but one huge kludgy workaround. It is not a feature and is based workflows that have been deprecated for many, many years. Export a proper PDF and then print that from Acrobat using the booklet feature there.

If this is being demanded or requested by a printer, find a new one. This one doesn’t want to do their job.

I can print booklet from Acrobat, but I need it as a pdf and I can't print booklet to pdf from Acrobat, which blows my mind a bit...

Well, someone MIGHT be able to help if you were to provide your InDesign version and EXACT operating system version.

The Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD is still working for me with CC2018. If you have recently upgraded you have to install the PPD and its folder in your InDesign's Presets folder. It's not a workaround, you are trying to print/save a Postscript file, so you need the proper PPD.

I don't ask for help on these forums much because of unhelpful attitudes like yours. It's not necessary. I haven't done anything but ask a question.

I did that. Or I think I did. Perhaps I need to restart the computer or something else? I can't charge for this time so I've stopped working on it and just sent off the package and a print-ready .pdf. I'd rather know how to do it, but I don't have a whole day to try and figure it out. Can you confirm that the PPD is installed in your Adobe InDesign CC2018 folder? The PPDs folder is case sensitive, should look like this:

Print Booklet is not a very robust imposition feature and there can be problems with the postscript workflow, because it lacks complete color management and transparency gets flattened. It really is intended for making in-house dummies from composite printers.

But if the PPD is properly installed you should be able to select it in the Print Settings... dialog:
