WEEK 1: Book body

In class:

Strategically designing for multi media: print & digital publishing

BREAK

Structure of the book: the physical parts, the general sections which make up a book, a book’s body and title page.

Homework: Style guide: Chapter Opening & Chapter Spread

Choose from one of the page sizes from this link: Specs for print (pdf file). Most of your books will probably be one of the two following page size options: 8” square or 5.375” x 8” portrait. Set up your Indesign document to size. Create your grid structure and potential text panels.

Next, review your text to find out if there are quotes, footnotes, captions, sidenotes, endnotes, chapter headings and/or numbers. Check for subheads, folios, and any text that might need to be treated differently from the rest of your text block. Establish a naming convention for these levels of hierarchy within your book. These naming conventions will be used for your paragraph/character styles.

Flow your text onto each sample page. Adjust text alignment, type size, leading and the column measure as needed. Add the running heads–or feet–and folios.

Create one layout in InDesign which you feel captures the tone of the text. Then save a copy of your Indesign layout and experiment with the tone by changing the text to a new set of typefaces.*

Bring in your digital files for next week.

*Plan to use an ornament or illustration somewhere in your book. It can be part of the
chapter opening or as an inline, anchored object. For right now, you can use a grey box
placeholder for position.
